The Combray Section of Marcel Proust's Swann's Way The "Combray" section of Marcel Proust's Swann's Way is an extended meditation on an idyllic past. The book begins, though, not with recollections of Combray, but with a description of the narrator's halfasleep state, a state of consciousness where he does not know where, or even who, he is. The expanded memories of his past, then, seem an attempt to establish a stable sense of self, a sense that continually eludes him. In this exploration, which constitutes the entirety of the "Combray" section, we find the narrator, a young man with literary aspirations, struggling to understand the characters of his childhood in a way that captures their contradictions, only to find that each person seems more like a spectrum of singular, varying selves than a single delimited identity.
From the first day a child is born, parents are there to nurture their child, to support them as they grow and develop. There is a lot to learn about raising a child under normal circumstances, but when a child has special needs parents must learn this whole new language of medical and special education terms (Overton, 2005). Parents enter this new world where navigating for the best interest of their child is riddled with challenges and obstacles that they need to somehow overcome. This is especially true when parents are dealing with the special education program in their child’s school.
Impression of Macbeth in First Two Acts The first two acts of the play Macbeth are probably the most crucial; they set the scene, introduce the characters and, with the bloody murder of Duncan, give us a taste of the horror to come. For the person Macbeth, the first two acts are equally as important and significant. We, as the audience, gain many insights into his thoughts and feelings through his powerful soliloquies; we see his fear, excitement and temptation when the witches inform him of their prophecy, we see this initial reaction buckle under the strains of his anxiety.

The Cybernetic Plot of Ulysses A paper delivered at the CALIFORNIA JOYCE conference (6/30/93) To quote the opening of Norbert Wiener's address on Cybernetics to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in March of 1950, The word cybernetics has been taken from the Greek word kubernitiz (kyberNEEtis) meaning steersman. It has been invented because there is not in the literature any adequate term describing the general study of communication and the related study of control in both machines and in living beings.

The Sikh religion originated in Pakistan in 1499, founded by Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Sikhism believes in one God, and the goodness of the human soul, and while it takes concepts from both Hinduism and the Muslim religion, it is an entirely unique religion. Worldwide, the Sikh religion has over twentytwo million followers, and is considered the fifth largest religion in the world. North America is experiencing an increase in citizens of Sikh religion and this means that healthcare providers have to continually become more knowledgeable about this religion in order to properly deal with Sikh patients (Mago, 2001).
The Ideal Customer Rarely is one asked to describe the ideal customer in any aspect not directly related to customer service. Therefore, I find this a refreshing and highly interesting project to stretch my imagination and experience dealing with the nature of most customers. In this paper I will describe what attributes, attitude, and mentality makes up what I consider the perfect customer. The ideal customer is not so cynical they do not trust anyone or prejudge anyone before they see any results.

The Basic Physics of Tornadoes Conceptualize darting through a field, as the environment becomes stagnant, the sky converts into a deathly green complexion, while hail embarks on a free fall. Fear loiters over one’s vertebra as the infiltrating sound of an alarm roams through the air. The decrepit sound of a freight train is augmenting louder and louder with every passing second. He/She looks around and becomes flabbergasted at the abysmal sight that is a vortex of wind on the horizon. Instinctively this person endeavored to run, but soon realized one could not out run this nightmare.
Gay Marriage Should be Legal Gay marriage should be legal because as woman and man, all individuals have the same right in society; because samesex couples can constitute a good based family; because it is just a way to make official a common union nowadays, even with the religious issue; because it is not related to polygamy; and because love matters and it does not differ in nature according to the sex of its object or the person who experiences it. The first reason why same sex marriage should be legal is because it is fair for all individuals to have the same rights in society.
PostAbortive Drug and Alcohol Abuse The new website, , offers extensive research on the psychiatric and social consequences of abortion taken from journals of medicine, psychology and the social sciences. A new study, not mentioned on the site, was just published in the American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse. It breaks through the barrier of political correctness which seems to be the editorial policy of many American psychology journals. Authors David Reardon, Ph.D., founder of the Elliot Institute, and Philip Ney, M.D.
The battle of Stalingrad raged from August 1942 until the German surrender on 2 February 1943. Significantly, it was the first catastrophic defeat to befall the Wermacht Army who not only lost the battle but were severely humiliated. Indeed, the German Army never fully recovered from this blow to its morale. Upwards of 270,000 troops were killed and 91,000 prisoners were taken by the Red Army; included in this latter number were 23 German Generals. Conversely, morale in the Red Army soared as a consequence of Stalingrad giving the Russians increased strength and confidence.
In the story of, "Araby" James Joyce concentrated on three main themes that will explain the purpose of the narrative. The story unfolded on North Richmond Street, which is a street composed of two rows of houses, in a desolated neighborhood. Despite the dreary surroundings of "dark muddy lanes" and "ash pits" the boy tried to find evidence of love and beauty in his surroundings. Throughout the story, the boy went through a variety of changes that will pose as different themes of the story including alienation, transformation, and the meaning of religion (Borey).

Dandelion Wine After reading Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury, I became more aware of the magic of summer and what it means to truly live. The novel gave me a new perspective of thee idea that life is like summer where you’re alive and feel free, but how it sadly doesn't last forever. The novel opened me up to the idea of looking at person’s mental age instead of their physical age. The novel follows the path of Douglas, a twelveyearold boy living in Green Town, Illinois. In the novel, Douglas strives to enjoy his summer and to live his life to its fullest.
Romeo and Juliet: A Timeless Tragedy William Shakespeare wrote his ever famous play, Romeo and Juliet, in 1595. Like many of Shakespeare's plays, the story of Romeo and Juliet is timeless and has proven to remain perhaps the most popular story of tragic love. In 1968, 373 years after the play was originally written, a new movie was released and hailed as a new and futuristic Romeo and Juliet. This film is directed by Franco Zeffirelli and stars Leonard Whiting as Romeo and Olivia Hussey as Juliet.
Subculture There is something about the ideology of a subculture that sparks an interest in me. Maybe it is intriguing due to its members’ originality, courage to stand up for beliefs, or freely expressing their own self identity. A subculture forms by individuals taking a risk, separating themselves from the mainstream, and forming their own distinctive norms, not caring what the “normal” members of the mainstream society think of them. Or do they care. Maybe that is the exact statement a subculture is making.

Yeats in Time: The Poet's Place in History All things can tempt me from this craft of verse: One time it was a woman's face, or worse The seeming needs of my fooldriven land; Now nothing but comes readier to the hand Than this accustomed toil. In these lines from "All Things can Tempt Me" (40, 15), Yeats defines the limitations of the poet concerning his role in present time. These "temptations" (his love for the woman, Maude Gonne, and his desire to advance the Irish Cultural Nationalist movement) provide Yeats with the foundation upon which he identifies his own limitations.

Feminism Empowerment The dictionary definition of feminism is stated: the movement for the political, social, and educational equality of women with men. Truth be told, feminism can mean a whole deal of things. It can mean women fighting for jobs that were mainly held by men with equal pay. It can mean women fighting for equal education in a so called male dominant world. Feminism can give lesbian women the chance to adopt and have children. These are just a few definitions of feminism.

Symbolic Food in Toni Morrison’s Beloved In two passages of Toni Morrison’s novel, Beloved, she describes a party at 124. Everyone become so full from the food that flows endlessly that they become angry at Baby Suggs extravagance. Baby Suggs thinks it was this overfullness that caused them all to not notice the coming of Schoolteacher and his sons. The narrator of one passage is Stamp Paid and he recounts to Paul D. what happened at the party – what they ate and how it made everyone feel. These two passages rely on the retelling of stories from the Bible – the story of the Fall from Grace in the Garden of Eden in the Old Testament and the story of Jesus’ feeding of the hungry with an endless supply of loaves and fishes in the New Testament.

Paul, the Motherly Paterfamilias Introduction In Paul's time the role of paterfamilias in Roman households—as well as in general society—was that of an authoritarian ruler with absolute control over all people in his realm. In his letters to the congregations that he had founded and towards which he felt paternal affection, the apostle Paul transcended this dominating relationship by expressing deep emotions of longing and affection. He also nurtured them by sharing his life with them and helping them resocialize to Christianity.
The Impact of the World Trade Center Attacks on New York City's Economy A study by the New York City Partnership and the Chamber of Commerce estimates that New York City's economy will sustain a gross loss of about $83 billion and lose 57,000 jobs over three years as a result of the World Trade Center attacks. The study, which was released Nov. 15, said even after payment of insurance claims and federal reimbursement for rescue, cleanup and infrastructure repair costs, the net damage to the economy is likely to be at least $16 billion in lost economic output.

Rhetorical Analysis Essay Just write. Use your imagination. Let your thoughts run wild and write with a passion. Is this what defines an essay. This is the ability to freely write of someone’s desires and dreams…all through an essay. In her excerpt “Portrait of the Essay as a Warm Body”, Cynthia Ozick uses diction, irony, and metaphor to help distinguish an essay from an article. Relating to an essay, words can have a very powerful meaning. According to Ozick, the words to an essay do that very thingthey portray power.

William B. Willcox's The Age of Aristocracy This compact little book is Volume III of a series entitled A History of England, edited by Lacey Baldwin Smith, and its inclusion in this series reveals much about its scope and intent. Smith writes in the Preface to the series that "their authors have tried by artistry to step beyond the usual confines of a textbook and conjure up something of the drama of politics, of the wealth of personalities, and even of the pettiness, as well as the greatness, of human motivation." Some of this can be found in The Age of Aristocracy; some of it cannot.
Life of an Intercessor There are many meanings to the word intercession: 1. to have a conversation on behalf of, 2. to plead with or for another, 3. to make a petition on behalf of another, and 4. to approach a King to plead the cause of others.1 God has used a countless number of people as intercessors over several years. There are many recorded in the Bible and many modern intercessors have had books written about them. For example, Esther was a great intercessor in the Bible because she risked her own life by going into King Ahasuerus courts to plead for her people to not be sentenced to death according to the decree in which Haman made.
Fight Club Review The movie that is being reviewed and analyzed is Fight Club, which stars Brad Pitt and Edward Norton. Fight Club is in a genre on its own, but falls into the categories of action and mystery. We will be looking at the subdivisions of plot, character, setting, and focus. By analyzing these points of the movie we can see why Fight Club belongs to the certain genre it is placed in. The movie starts off where one the characters is held at gun point. Of course we all wonder how he got there, so the narrator takes us back to where it all starts.
